1941

The Ustaša state. Following the Axis invasion, the Independent State of Croatia is proclaimed with Zagreb as its capital. The regime’s camp system, centred on Jasenovac, murders Serbs, Jews and Roma on a very large scale. It is the darkest chapter in the city’s history and Croatia is still arguing about how to teach it.
